Is the bison already injured? Legs and maybe it's ribs looked haggard... but maybe that's just how bison look.

And s they come around the first turn, Bison Bob is in the lead, but Fozzy Bear is closing fast.

The bison apparently fell into one of the hot water pools at Yellowstone. It was burned badly. The grizzly didn't catch it. Park rangers ended his suffering the next day and, as they do with animals that are injured by vehicles, they probably brought it somewhere where the carcass could be scavenged.
